[Art] Phoenix Wright - After Entirely Too Much Deliberation On the Matter COLOR (Phoenix/Miles) (PG)

Title: After Entirely Too Much Deliberation On the Matter
Fandom: Phoenix Wright or Ace Attorney or whatever they're calling it these days
Characters/Pairings: Phoenix/Miles
Rating: PG for the mankissings!
Crit/Feedback: Always welcome! Especially now that I am learning how to colour XD
Notes: First of all, this is birthday gift art for [livejournal.com profile] bottle_of_shine! Happy Birthday, Nay! Second of all, due credit: this was inspired by another PW pic, Bedroom Kisses by [livejournal.com profile] kamapon. In other news, I tried to make the shading style here vaguely resemble the game art, but, uh, let's just say that it resembles it in spirit >.> I have one more note, but it's behind Nay's b-day surprise =P

Thumbnail:

A/N: I should have much to say about this but I have been working on it for so long that I DON'T WANNA TALK ABOUT IT. The only big news is that THIS IS MY FIRST BACKGROUND OMG. My first fully rendered, fully coloured background. I TRIED. I TRIED SO HARD. I still think the colour and/or foreground background balance is off somehow but I get the feeling I won't be able to fix it until my skills improve overall. Feedback is, of course, always welcome, even if I'm all post-art cranky XD

Oh no, wait, I do have one thing to say. Miles is canonically a secret Steel Samurai fanboy. The posters in the background there were hard work! The Steel Samurai one especially, since I actually REDREW THE WHOLE THING, based off the only good screenshot we get in the game. I redrew the lines and coloured it and extrapolated his fan and knee. I'm pretty proud of that part, actually!

TOTALLY APPROPRIATE.

[identity profile] chaosraven.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
Looks pretty good to me! The only parts that throw me visually are: the length of the bed, Edgeworth's right arm (the one he's leaning on), and his lack of nipple. The Pink Princess poster is very rad, though.

[identity profile] justira.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
Oh Christ, man nipples XD

I think I didn't just forget I subconsciously suppressed my anatomical knowledge! Mostly because I guess I have trouble drawing man nipples without making them look, uh... not good. In most drawings I see they seem really off to me. NOTE TO SELF: work on this!

Thanks for noticing, cripes, I'm glad to have something I *know* I need to work on =)

Ahaha, I just realized that the length of Mile's bed is DECEPTIVE. I made a whole two-point perspective wireframe for this, and I actually made sure Mile's bed was about the right width and length -- and then I added a really tall footboard! WAY TO GO ME. I didn't notice that the height of the footboard bade the bed seem smaller, I think I just really wanted to include the footboard and, since I knew from my perspective lines how long the bed was, I didn't realize that it screwed it up =\

Thanks for pointing that out as well >.<

Edgeworth's arm! Which part? I think his bicep area is bothering me... is that it?

Overall THANK YOU VERY MUCH for the feedback! I love specifics like this =D =D =D

[identity profile] chaosraven.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
Finding a good position for men's nipples is annoying. I suggest staring at pictures of half naked guys if you don't have one of your own to use. >D

All you would have to do to keep the headboard and fix the proportion is add a bit more canvas space or drop the footboard back a little.

The bicep is part of it... the top part coming off his shoulder would indent further down, closer to halfway down his upper arm as opposed to a third of the way. The other part is his forearm. I see *why* you made it look the way it does because his wrist would look wider due to foreshortening but it has the effect of making his arm look really cylindrical. I would make more of a dip towards the end of the brachioradialis (the muscle going up from his thumb) and then have it go back out again towards his wrist.

If that doesn't make sense, I can e-mail you a drawn over arm section. But I don't want to step on any toes since this was a gift to begin with. ^_^

[identity profile] justira.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no, please step all over anything you can help with, I'm serious! I would LOVE a drawn-over arm section; I've found that to be a really really helpful thing with art =D =D

Bah, I think the footboard thing was because I was trying to keep Nick and Miles themselves in the lower right corner, so I neither wanted to add canvas at the bottom or get rid of the footboard. WAY TO GO ME. But! Now I have something to keep in mind next time I try a background =D

And why madam, to suggest such a mode of research! Staring at half naked men, really! (It's cool, I have one of my own AND many refs which I should have used this time *fail*)

[identity profile] chaosraven.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, no problemo. What is your preferred email? I like to do draw overs because it means less explaining! But I try not to assume that everyone will find them helpful.

I AM UNASHAMED! >D Staring at my boy (and various others) is what I do with my spare time.

[identity profile] justira.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
I do not lie in my little feedback tag thing! It's there for a reason =P

And no, drawovers are GREAT. I've done a couple for people, and they seemed to find it very helpful, and I used to have a friend who'd do it for em and GOD was that a luxury! I miss being able to get my art, uh, kinda beta'd like that. I would hand it to her, and she'd send it back to me with scribbling all over it and it would magically get ten times better! =D

My preferred email is my gmail account! I think it's linked in my profile, but in case it isn't the username is the same (as it is pretty much everywhere =P).

Thanks very much in advance =D

OH WELL HELLO SIRS

The background is gorgeous, well done! I love the colors in all of it, and I love how BIG and MANLY they both are; the thing about Phoenix Wright that makes its art so iconic is the fact that the men (especially these two) are anything but whispy bishounen! I have to agree about the worrying missing nipples, but as someone else suggested, you can always do a little 'research'. ;) My favorite part is definitely Edgeworth's hands, the pull of fabric is really believable and tangible. ♥

[identity profile] justira.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 01:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I, sorry, I am cracking up about your icon. GIVE ME A MINUTE HERE.

OKAY.

I luuuuuuurrrve that the game art for PW has everyone, ladies included, looking very SOLID. They all look like they MIGHT HAVE INTERNAL ORGANS ALL UP IN THAR. What a strange idea!

But just FYI, Miles is seriously canonically BUILT LIKE A TANK (http://gyakusai.magical-art.com/gallery/gallery.php?g2_itemId=507), and while I imagine Nick doesn't take as good care of himself, he's no slouch either (http://www.court-records.net/screenshots2.htm).

I think actually a big part of why the game art comes off as manly is because of the way the HANDS are done. Nick and Miles both have big, bulky, articulated MAN-HANDS, and I love it.

And! MY QUEST TO IMPROVE WITH FABRIC CONTINUES. I Think I give myself an A PLUS for improvement (DO YOU SEE THE BEDSHEET. DO YOU SEE IT.) but a B- or so on actual appearance. SOON. SOON I WILL BE ABLE TO DO FABRIC WELL. Sooooooon.

NEXT UP: Lucci/Shuraiya! I am having CRAZYTIMES COLOURING EXPERIMENTS over there, but I am having my fun after all the hair-pulling I had with this pic. I hope it turns out well, JUST FOR YOU =P

[identity profile] shuraiya.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
OH I KNOW, RIGHT? I've only played through part of the second game, but I love the solidness of everybody.

YESSSSSS THEIR BIG MAN HANDS SLAPPIN EACH OTHERS' ASSES THE DESK AND EVERYTHING <33333333

You got an A++ from me, for sure on the improvement AND the actual appearance!

NEXT UP: OH BOY OH BOY I CAN'T WAITTTTTTTT ILU <33333333333

HAHAHA I TRIED (http://justira.livejournal.com/226423.html)

[identity profile] shuraiya.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
I AM TRYING TO WRITE SOMETHING COHERENT

[identity profile] ash-mantle.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Hello, Ira! Ira drew some men again, one of them has nice pants.

Have a happy new year, and I like the shading on the pastels and wood/earth tones.

[identity profile] justira.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Why yes, I am MUCH OF THE MAN-DRAWING lately. Sadly, the thing I am colouring/finishing right now is also of the man-drawing, but the next thing I draw is supposed to have lady-parts! HERE'S LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.

Happy new year to you as well, and thank you much =D

[identity profile] ash-mantle.livejournal.com 2009-01-03 04:08 pm (UTC)(link)
You're welcome.

...LADY PARTS.

unf.

....*tries to assemble coherence*

unf. yeah. that.

I love the Steel Samurai poster in the background - it's so well done! And Miles. Without a shirt. mmmmmm nom.

[identity profile] justira.livejournal.com 2009-01-02 05:18 pm (UTC)(link)
ICON LAWLS

Miles is such a fanboy. I heart him so!

[identity profile] delladella.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
No clue who these guys are, but nice job. I love the detail above the headboard, the posters, and the coloring looks great to my admittedly untrained eye.

[identity profile] justira.livejournal.com 2009-01-05 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
It's a DELLA! =D

Long time no see! And thanks very much for taking a look and leaving such a nice comment, even though you don't know the fandom =)

How's it been? I think we both dropped off the face of the interwebs for a couple months!

[identity profile] delladella.livejournal.com 2009-01-06 04:36 am (UTC)(link)
It's an Ira!

It's no bother at all, rather a pleasure. I think art is universal or at least much more inclusive than fanfic, per se.

We did disappear! I'm great, actually, and glad to see you back in business. Don't let's be strangers!

[identity profile] not-cynical.livejournal.com 2009-01-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
H-holy shit.

I think I may have fangirled at you rather excessively over the lineart, so please repeat my previous fangirling x 10000 for this one because holy shit. :D

I love the colouring - and that you changed the lineart colours to match the colouring fills me with absurd amounts of glee - and I love the background! The shading is fantastic, and I kinda keep finding myself flailing happily over the feet for no reason that I can understand.
