Halp.

So, help me out here, flist.

One Piece fans please help.

If you're on my flist and you like One Piece you probably know that I run [livejournal.com profile] grand_line_vine and probably also that one of the sections there is Editor's Choice, where I and the other editors rec stuff.

Well both of the other editors who used to work with me have asked to leave, for perfectly legitimate reasons pertaining to their offline lives. That's fine, and I'm grateful they could help me for the time they did. As far as I understand it, both indicated that they would probably return once their lives quieted down. I think. One of them pretty sure, the other I'm not sure.

Regardless, this puts me in an awkward situation. I am now the only editor doing recs, and that feels unfair. I do not want that section to become the [livejournal.com profile] justira variety hour. The section is there to put forward a mix quality work, not to be my soapbox. I already have one all my own over at [livejournal.com profile] picks_n_paeans. If I want to rec One Piece stuff (and I do) then I have a place to do it.

So my question is: Should I keep the Editor's Choice section?

Things to consider:
1) Not enough people are submitting fandom recs. If that section were producing any steady stream (even a trickle) of recs, then I would have no qualms about closing the Editor's Choice section, at least until there is someone else other than me who can also rec. The three sections (New, Editor's Choice, Fandom Recs) are supposed to balance each other. More to the point, the Editor's Choice is there to provide recs until Fandom Recs becomes a steady source of recs, since the New section is 100% inclusive and has no quality control whatsoever.

2) Do people actually use this section? Do they like the recs therein? Do they use one section (art vs. fic) more than the other?

3) Should I close the section just until other people come who will rec with me? Should I close it all together? Should I keep going on my own? Speaking of which, if you want to rec with me, pretty please apply.

4) Seriously, I don't want that section to be my soapbox. If people are fine with it being just me in there I can keep doing it, but if the idea bothers anyone else as much as it does me, I'd rather go. The Vine isn't there for me, it's there for readers. Hell, I mean, I'm an elitist bitch when it comes to fanworks -- it would be horrible if the Vine was run according to my tastes. And I don't even want to start that, not even one section, which I was nervous about from the start, even when there were three different people doing it.

Your input, please. Please. I'm trying to serve people as best as I can. Please feel free to respond here or on today's issue of the Vine, where I have included an announcement summarizing the siuation.

Reccing is hard for people.

My advice, if it bothers you to do it alone--stop, maybe lessen the restrictions you have in place on regular fandom recs, and start searching our people who are reccing privately and links to those. It's a downgrade in a way, but if it ends up causing you less stress, it might be for the better.

*feels bad for causing* >.>

The thing is, I *do* enjoy it. I *like* reccing. I wouldn't have started [livejournal.com profile] picks_n_paeans if I didn't.

Mostly my concern here is... fandom? Other people? VAGUE THINGS.

MY CONCERN IS VAGUE THINGS.

Yes, I stress over being able to find recs. But I'll do that anyway. I don't mind reccing but I DO mind putting too much of my own influence into the Vine. I know, I started it, I organized it, I end up picking the sites that it collects from and I make the judgement calls on what to include (mostly if it breaks the TOS of whatever site hosts it) and I know that's just like ME ME ME ME, but there's something that bothers me more about the editor recs. The newsletter isn't supposed to be about me!

I don't know -_-

And honey, you're fine. I was really glad to have you on board but you've got your project to work on right now and it's perfectly legitimate and right for you to focus on that. Instead of ending up doing both reccing and project worse because you're trying to do both, focus on your project, which is more important.

*feels slightly guilty that she was sick last night*

VAGUE IDEA: Lessen the restrictionson regular fandom recs and pick a few of those each week so they vary.

I HAVE RECS ALSO. ...I just need to type them up. ^__^;

Oh, it's okay that you were sick! Try to let me know, when you can, and it's fine =)

Yeah, I'm getting the impression that lessening the restrictions would be good. I think I might want to talk to you and Nay about that this weekend.

Yay recs =D

Aaaand don't worry about the newsletter tonight -- I'm busy and will do it myself in the morning

1) Not enough people are submitting fandom recs. .__.; I'm sorry. I can't think of any recs because I haven't seen that much of the OPverse outside of LJ to be able to reccomend anything.

2) Considering how little attention recs have been getting over all, I don't think I'd mind if the art and fic recs get lumped together. I like the recs, even if sometimes I'm just too lazy to check them out (but do later anyway).

3 + 4) It's not like I'd be upset if you recced the stuff you liked, because it's still someone else's opinion and you're reccing the stuff you like that other people mighn't have seen. I'm okay if you want to rec the stuff you like.

You and the others have really put a lot of effort into this newspaper. I think we should all be grateful just for that. *hugs* Thank you all againnnn. ;__;

First of all, thanks so much for responding! It's always awesome to hear from readers =D

I'm still thinking about what to do with the sections, but I'm really glad to have your input. I got about a week to consider it XD

Oh, and you are perfectly allowed, nay, encouraged, to rec inside the OP LJverse. Totally. 100%. Have at! =D

"Rec" is short for "recommendation". When you rec something, you recommend it to other people. Reccing is a fairly popular activity among fans, since there's so much material produced that it's hard to find great stuff on your own. Here, reccers (people who write recs) come in, finding good fics, authors, art sites, AMVs, or whatever it is they choose to rec. Reccers provide links and oftena little information and commentary on why they enjoyed something enough to rec it. For more information on reccing, you could try reading through the [livejournal.com profile] recology journal (start from the earlier entries), which discusses reccing in detail and was run by [livejournal.com profile] tomomichi (a prolific reccer of all types of media), and [livejournal.com profile] aishuu, who recs a fic every day in [livejournal.com profile] rec_a_day.

Hope that was helpful =)

SO, I'm going to be one of those lame people that have to admit that I didn't read your post, I'm here to shower you with praise for your fan art that you drew for Nay! I am Matt, the one who "approved" hahaha. WONDERFUL! I have some ideas for some more, if you ever want to hear them ;o) lol
