[Daily Doodle] Thumbs up

Daily Doodle: True facts of life: I have the straightest thumbs on God's green earth. That is my thumb at maximum extension. The absolutely tragic consequence: I can't snap my fingers. At all. This has caused me untold grief and suffering my entire life.

Trufax.

(Though seriously if anyone knows tricks for snapping with straight thumbs... >.>)

Also: I can't whistle none too good neither.

The partner, meanwhile, has thumbs that look like snapping platforms. I am not even a little jealous.

Human variation? Seriously awesome. Just fyi.

Anyway, have a thumbs up. Reffed -- this is not the week for originality.

I have a really straight thumb too, but I can snap. My thumb is even bent in a little bit when I start the snap. Almost if I were making a circle with my thumb and middle finger, but on the knuckle of the middle finger rather than the tip.

You and I have almost the same thumbs! My nail arches back a little more but the front/inside profile is the same. And your guy and my guy ALSO have the same thumbs. WEIRDNESS.

For snapping: I start by making the fox shape but only with my first three fingers. That is, index finger straight up (45ish degrees will be most comfortable for actually snapping), middle finger and thumb pads pressed together, other two fingers curled naturally. The ideal placement of my thumb is centered on the first knuckle line of my middle finger. The thumb mostly stays in place and the middle finger slides down and ends at the base of the thumb. Let your index finger do whatever it wants to (I end up with a loosely curled fist at the end of a snap). Hahaha, hopefully that will help?

And for the actual art: it looks good. I can't see the ref, because I'm not a DA member but I assume you're right on for the reference. HOWEVER, I would say, instinctively, that the thumb is too short. By which I mean, you probably drew it as you saw it perfectly, but my impression of how it *should* look doesn't quite match with that reality. I think that impression comes from the narrow wrist/wide palm.

My thumbs are much more like your partner's.

My thumbs aren't quite platforms, but they're pretty well bent. I've always taken my snapping skills as a consolation for the fact that I am utterly incapable of whistling.
