Roxas and Squall: totally related

Baaaaaaaah I was archiving for ff_press today and came across someone who'd made a bunch of Squall/Rinoa vids. And I got distracted and watched a bunch and GUYS.

Guys.

SO. Much. Wibbling.

Wibbling.

I have never made a secret of the following fact: I AM A BIG SQUALL/RINOA WOOBIE.

(Note to self: draw Squall/Rinoa arts. Put it in the docket. After the other uh. Several things I am supposed to draw. Yeah. "Several".)

I think I'm somewhat at an advantage here because I like Squall and Rinoa as characters individually. In fact, I LOVE Squall. And not just for his amazingly sweet ass (although that too is awesome and I should dedicate a picture to it. Several pictures.)

Squall is way up there in my list of favourite lead characters of anything ever, where Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney) and Luffy (One Piece) and, incidentally, Zidane of FFIX un-fame also live. Also there? Roxas. I think the Roxas thing is significant, though, because I'm suspecting that I was drawn to Roxas and Squall for many of the same reasons.

So, KHII had a lot of problems. I had a big big discussion of it in the works at some point but I think school/work/the interwebs ate it. But among its many, many flaws, I think one thing KHII got right was building pathos from the start. The interesting thing about that first uh... HOUR OR SO of KHII (really it is a dvd that you sometimes have to pause and press some other buttons) is that it is really pretty much Life In Roxas' Head. Like, oh, all of FFVIII is Squall's Thoughts On Boring Grownups.

FYI. I will NEVER. EVER. Tire. Of Squall's initial assessment of Laguna: moron.

OMG REALLY YOU LOVED ROXAS, TOO?? He was like my favorite part of KHII! Aside from... Leon and Cloud, lol. We were so upset when we were like NOOOO WE DON'T GET TO PLAY AS ROXAS ANYMORE!!

And just for you, the icon again. Cause it's awesome.

GUUUUUH I LOVED ROXAS WITH MOUTH.

I! I ADMIT IT. HE MIGHT BE MY FAVOURITE. Him or Axel. I can't decide. (Leon doesn't count, he is Squall and I already loved Squall. Leon and his puppies! I heart.) I think Axel is just a Thing, though, about complicated friendships and tragic lost causes. Roxas I can credit entirely a to a job well done on Squenix's part.

(Well. Sort of. I am ignoring the gameplay issues and just talking about the storytelling. Ho ho. I am not touching the gameplay issues in this post that is full of WIBBLING AND QUEE.)

I was PRETTY PEEVED when the Roxas part ended! I LIKED that part, it really felt a lot more in-his-head than the Sora parts in either game, do you know what I mean? I do enjoy Sora; he is kind of irresistible. But Roxas was what drove the game for me -- I kept playing at least 80% because I wanted to know WHAT HAPPENS TO ROXAS GUYS. And Roxas's story is SO SAD.

I am... anticipating 358/2 Days with... I am not sure. Part of it is dread. Part of it is OMG WANT NOW NOW NOW. I kind of enjoy the feel I have for Roxas's life as it stands -- vague, patchy, like it barely happened and no one remembers. Coming around always back to Sora in the end -- but you KNOW, it has been made perfectly clear, that there was a real person there, and who was just kind of snuffed out by everyone.

Except Axel, in the end. I love their friendship HARD. Also fan of the slashings, but god I love it either way.

... wait was this a post about Squall?

Oh right! I love Squall. I will now sit back and enjoy your icon.

(PS: Leon/Cloud is kind of one the most meltingly hot things ever)

lol I pretty much agree with everything you just said. Also about Leon/Cloud, since that pairing never even entered my mind before I found Kingdom Hearts and suddenly it was like one of those awesome lightbulb moments where it switches on and it's like - oh! HAHAHA OH THIS SHIP TOTALLY WORKS! And then I was hooked. It's actually my only real KH ship, which is hilarious in and of itself. xD

I admit to being really upset when Axel's end came about. I was all sniffly and sad-face making because I liked him. I also liked Demyx but probably more because I like to dance around yelling DANCE WATER, DANCE! and not really for any real characterization. Just random screaming. Which is sometimes okay hahaha.

Sora is kinda un-hateable but he never really drew me the way Roxas did. I was so invested in that damn storyline. I loved Hayner and Olette, too. The foursome with their little marbles- oh I almost cried when Roxas couldn't find his, it was terrible lol. ROOOOXAS!!

Plus someone once had this hilarious icon of Axel going "ROXAS!" and then it cut back to Sora going "NO I'M SORA!" and then it just kept repeating over and over again and I laughed a lot. xD Easily amused!

....

AND SQUALL'S MAGNIFICENT ASS.

Haha sadly I cannot participate fully in the Leon/Cloud goodness yet, as I haven't played FFVII nor seen/played any of its bastard children. I started to play it. Then I got seriously wigged out by Jenova. Then I got to the part where you have to make Cloud do that marching thing in disguise and I just could not get it to gooooo and I haven't picked it up since. Instead I fled into the arms of the Nintendo era! FFIV, FFIII, FVI, and now I have FFV. (Only finished IV so far, various percentages on the rest.)

But that MINOR POINT aside, I know... some... about Cloud. And I know all about Leon. And they get like all of ten seconds of being on-screen together and it SO WORKS. It is PERFECT.

I'm kinda shippy in KHII fandom, maybe because so many of the canon relationships are all kinds of screwy and that hits buttons for me! I think Leon/Cloud falls outside that, though, into the realm of WHY CROSSOVERS NEED TO BE XD

And yes, I find it impossible to even just not-like Sora. I have to like him. He is just. SORA. I found Demyx likable, too, for all that he didn't get much build-up. He was just! Fun!

BUT YES ROXAS. I loved his little storyline, with him and his friends and how Ansem wouldn't even give him ONE DAY AT THE BEACH. There is basically nothing about his story that doesn't make me wibble.

Actually, one of the things that I love about Roxas is how you can use him and Sora to each illuminate the other. Like, I've seen people characterize Sora as this perpetually cheerful and peppy happy-go-lucky character -- but if you look at Roxas, you can see that he and Sora share a temper and a pretty bull-headed determination. And you can see how much Sora cares about people reflected in how Roxas interacts with the Twilight Town folks. When he's given a chance to pretend at a normal life, Roxas fumbles his way towards a heartbreakingly decent guy. This is the part of him that reminds me a lot of Squall, I think... they both feel like they're stumbling towards normal when the world pulls the rug out from under them.

... In other words, Roxas made me like Sora more. If that makes sense.
