[Fic] FFIX - "A Light of Truer Blue" (Vivi and Zidane)

Title: A Light of Truer Blue
Fandom: FFIX
Characters/Pairings: Vivi and Zidane
Rating: G
Words: 138/300 (134 fic + 162 canon = 300)
Spoilers: Through end of game
Crit/Feedback: Both are very welcome =)
Notes: Written for FFIX:"The roads we walk" challenge at [livejournal.com profile] ff_100This drabble uses the entirety of what I believe to be Vivi's narration from the very end of the game. I really wanted to set this up as a kind of dialogue, though -- more specifically, as if Zidane was reading a note Vivi left and thinking about it as he read -- so this seemed necessary. I hope this is okay! More in my notes below.

A Light of Truer Blue

--

I always talked about you, Zidane. How you were a special person to us, because you taught us all how important life is.

I told you once, Vivi, that I had nothing to teach. Heh. I still think I was right. I think you found that part out on your own.

You taught me that life doesn't last forever. That's why we have to help each other and live life to the fullest.

You knew that, too.

...Unlike me, you never forgot it.

Even if you say goodbye, you'll always be in our hearts. So, I know we're not alone anymore.

I guess it seems easier to say goodbye when you’re the one leaving. I didn’t understand that until now.

Why I was born... How I want to live... Thanks for giving me time to think.

In the end... I think you did more with that time than I did.

To keep doing what you set your heart on... It's a very hard thing to do. We were all so courageous...

And you more than any of us. You never faltered on your path.

What to do when I felt lonely... That was the only thing you couldn't teach me. But we need to figure out the answer for ourselves...

Yeah. That’s when I faltered. And you helped me find my way again.

I'm so happy I met everyone... I wish we could've gone on more adventures. But I guess we all have to say goodbye someday.

My first adventure was searching for the blue light to learn about myself. But I found something else instead.

...Goodbye, my friend.

Everyone... Thank you... Farewell. My memories will be part of the sky...

Thank you, Vivi.

Zidane smiled up at the sky, squinting into the purest blue light he had ever seen.

End.

A/N: I feel very strange about this one due to the amount of quoting from canon. However, I did really want to structure it this way. This drabble didn't go to a beta, either, so no one was around to tell me I should know better. Nonetheless, or perhaps especially, feedback is very welcome =)

I did manage to hit the exact 300 word count while working around the canon quotes, so I'm happy with that, at least. Even if the word count for my parts isn't an evn hundred >.>

I do think that Vivi taught Zidane a lot, and that he was a truer, brighter guiding light than the cold blue light of Garland's world.
