What I meant to say is that, with the current situation of fandom at large, it is probably more difficult but by no means impossible for a single-fandom archive (particularly one with FA's further restrictions) to support themselves, compared to how fandom functioned several years ago. It can and, as you say, is being done. So I was trying to imply that this might make FA's situation more difficult to navigate, but was probably not, from what I can tell, a deal-breaker.
However! That is a good point about FA's userbase being younger; thanks for passing it on, I had not considered that. So it might be harder to raise funds through the userbase, but it still leaves the staff responsible for the poor handling =\
